In 2011, responding to a feedback from a land owner on Libaran, Sabah Wildlife Department contacted Alexander Yee regarding the possibility of working together towards setting up of a turtle conservation hatchery on Libaran Island. Upon surveying the island and ensuring that turtles do land and nest on the island, a group of villagers were quickly assembled and together, they underwent an Honorary Wildlife Warden course conducted by the Sabah Wildlife Department.

In July 2013, a Memoradum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Sabah Wildlife Department and Trekkers Lodge Sdn Bhd to operate a turtle hatchery on Libaran island. This MoU has two parts:

  1. Trekkers Lodge would run and manage the turtle hatchery and open it to students and visitors for educational purposes on turtle conservation.

  2. Sabah Wildlife Department would provide the technical know-how of operating a turtle hatchery. The aim is for turtle conservation.

The hatchery is called Taman Hadiah (Gift Garden).
