Libaran Island is about 45 minutes by boat ride north of Sandakan and lies next to the Turtle Island Marine Park of Seligan, Gulisan and Bankugan Kecil. It is approximately 650 acres in size with 450 villagers living on the island. Their main livelihood is fishing as well as boat and net making.

Tucked away on the north eastern part of Libaran, Trekkers Lodge Sdn Bhd operates Walai Penyu Resort and a turtle conservation hatchery.  Visitors to Walai Penyu resort will be able to learn the important of turtles to our eco system and experience first-hand the turtle conservation work done on this island. Your trip will also include a walk about within the village and see how the islanders of Libaran live.

While you can spot wildlife such as otters on the near-by mangrove area, see how a megapod (a type of island bird) buries her eggs to prevent been eaten by predators, come face to face with fire flies and mangrove crab, the high light has to be the release of baby turtles in the evening! Be ready to get all emotional while you let these small creatures free into the ocean, knowing well that their survival rate is most likely 1% only!

If nature permits, you will be able to watch a mother turtle come ashore to lay her eggs. However, since the island is huge, not all landings are within the compound of the resort. And by the time visitors walked to the eggs laying site, the mother turtle would be on her way back to the embrace of the ocean!
